Life

Professor Thammanoon Ruengsawat

Technique: Oil on canvas

Size: 100 x 150 cm

According to Professor Thammanoon, the aim of the painting titled "Life" is to convey to viewers the truth and cycle of life that comprises birth, old age, sickness and death by using the lotus as a symbol. At the left side of the painting there are lotus buds indicating newborn life. It is colorful and the cool tones feature a greenish-blue color. As we progress to the middle, there are lotuses beginning to bloom and in full bloom, representing the adulthood stage of life. Moving to the right side of the painting, the lotus starts to wither and loses some petals reflecting the stage of life as it enters old age. Birth, old age, sickness, and death are normal and reflect everyone's life. This work of art was not painted from an actual scene. Rather, it brings together all the lotuses into the composition in order to create a painting that befits the intended story through the symbolic depiction of lotuses at various life stages. The painting essentially conveys the truth and cycle of life that revolves around birth, old age, sickness, and death.
